Top tips for writing feature articles

A feature story differs from a straight news story in one respect – its intent. A news story provides
information about an event, idea or situation. The feature does a bit more – it may also interpret
news, add dept h and colour to a story, instruct or entertain.

Structure :

· The introduction is the most important part - entice your reader, hook them in. Use drama, emotion, quotations, questions, descriptions
· The body of the article needs to keep any promises or answe r any questions raised in the introduction - try and maintain an "atmosphere" throughout the writing
· While the introduction draws the reader in, the conclusion should be written to help the reader remember the story - use a strong punchline

Some points to keep in mind:

· Focus on human interest - the feel and emotion you put into the article are critical. Don't think about writing a "science" story - think about writing a "human interest" story.
· Be clear about why you are writing the article. Is it to inform, persuade, observe, evaluate, or evoke emotion?
· Write in the active voice. In active writing, people do things. Passive sentences often have the person doing the action at the end of the sentence or things being done “by” someone.
· Accuracy is important - you can interpret and embroider but not fudge.
· Keep your audience clearly in mind - what are their desires, what really matters to them?
· Avoid clichés (cutting edge, world beating, revolutionary ) and sentimental statements - especially at the end of your article.
· Interviews for features usually need to be in-depth and in person rather than over the phone - this enables you to add in colour and detail.
· Use anecdotes and direct quotes to tell the story - try not to use too many of your own words.
· Talk to more than one person to provide a more complete picture – but don’t just add in sources to show how much work you’ve done. Be ruthless about who you put in and who you leave out!
· Don't rely on the computer spell-checker - especially those with a U.S. dictionary.
· Decide on the ‘tense' of your story at the start and stick to it. Present tense usually works best.
· Avoid lengthy, complex paragraphs. Your article will appear in columns, so one or two sentences equals a paragraph.
· Ideas come from everywhere - watch, read, listen, keep up to date, take notes. Talk to people outside the field of science to find out what interests and concerns them.

Getting your feature articles published

· READ the publication you want to write for (a surprising number of writers don’t and it shows)
· Give a proposal rather than full article
· Include good examples of your previously published work
· Write what the editor wants to publish, not what you want to write. How do you find out?
Study the editorial and staff writers' pieces - they are aimed precisely at the publication's
target audience
· Select your market - list six magazines that could buy your article and study them. The articles, advertising and letters to the editor will give vital clues to the interests and demographics of the audience
· A picture sells the story - offer good quality images as prints, transparencies or digital files. Check with the editor for the preferred option
· Obtain a style sheet for the publication
· Submit your story typed and double-spaced.
· Let the relevant person (editor/deputy editor) in the print media outlet know you are sending them an article. Follow this up with a phone call a week or so later
· Send your article to only one print media outlet initially. If they don't want to use it within a set time period, send it elsewhere.

LTTE Chief Prabhakaran reportedly shot dead

Liberation of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) chief Velupillai Prabhakaran has reportedly been shot dead along with his son Charles Antony and other Tiger commanders.

Unofficial reports said Prabhakaran was ambushed and shot dead while trying to flee Special Forces who closed in on the last rebel fortification.

A Sri Lankan military spokesman said that there has been no identification of Prabhakaran as yet.

There were reports that only DNA verification would confirm Prabhakaran's death, as he was known to move around with two doubles.

Earlier in the day, the Sri Lankan Army had claimed that Prabhakaran was alive and surrounded by government troops.

On Sunday, four senior rebel leaders were killed in fighting, the army said.

They included the head of the Tigers" political wing, Balasingham Nadesan, the head of rebels" peace secretariat Seevaratnam Puleedevan, and a military leader known as Ramesh.

The latest claims cannot be verified as reporters are barred from the war zone.

If confirmed, Prabhakaran's death could signal the end of the nearly three decade-long civil-ethnic war that cost the island nation the lives of thousands of innocent civilians.

Meanwhile, injured civilians continue to leave Sri Lanka"s war zone to get medical care.

The movement of civilians out of the war zone comes as the LTTE conceded defeat after sending out suicide attackers as part of a last-ditch attempt to keep the military"s final assault at bay on the square kilometre they control.

"This battle has reached its bitter end. We have decided to silence our guns," the LTTE"s diplomatic chief, Selvarajah Pathmanathan, said in a statement posted on the pro-rebel web site www.TamilNet.com on Sunday

A day before, Sri Lanka"s President Mahinda Rajapaksa had declared victory after troops seized the entire coast for the first time since the war erupted in 1983.

Eamcet-2009 will be conducted today in749 centres across the whole state...

Eamcet for engineering stream will be held in 606 centres from 10 am to 1 pm, the exam for medical and agricultural streams will be conducted in 143 centres from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm. In this year’s Eamcet 25 per cent weight will be given for Intermediate marks while determining the rank. Officials have asked the candidates to reach the exam centres at least one hour before the scheduled time. Students will be allowed into the centres from 9.30 am for morning session and from 2 pm in the afternoon session.

Students will not be allowed into the centres even one minute after the scheduled time of 10 am and 2.30 pm. While the number of students attempting engineering had gone up from 2.75 lakh last year to over 3.11 lakh this year, in the medicine and agriculture stream the number has come down from 79,000 to 65,000.

The examination material has already been dispatched to 22 regional centres across the state. The candidates will not be allowed to leave the halls before the end of the examination. Cell phones, calculators, pagers and any other devices will not be permitted inside. Police personnel will be deployed near exam centres and prohibitory orders under Section 144 would be clamped on 100-metre radius of the centres.

Sensex creates history: hits 14,000, triggers trade halt

Welcoming UPA's win in the general elections markets opened on a very upbeat note triggering of circuit breakers for the first time ever.

The shares surged nearly 15 percent within seconds of opening on Monday, triggering circuit breakers that halted trade for two hours as investors celebrated a sweeping election victory for the ruling coalition.

The markets further extended their gains which triggered the final circuit breaker that shuts trade for the day.

It was the first time a circuit breaker has been set off by a rise in the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), a spokesman said.

The benchmark 30-share BSE index rose 14.70 percent to 13,963.30 points, its highest since September 23, and the 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) index jumped 14.48 percent to 4,203.30, also an eight-month high.

Earlier, the BSE said its index had risen 10.7 percent before the halt.

"It is very surprising because the turnover was not much. It's very hard to understand how the circuit breakers have been triggered when the volumes are so low," T.S. Harihar, vice president at ICICI Securities, said.

Circuit breakers are set based on moves of 10 percent, 15 percent and 20 percent using the close to the previous quarter as a base. Triggering a circuit breaker in one market also closes the other.

The BSE index was up 1,789.88 points and the NSE index was up 531.65 points at the halt, both having crossed the 15 percent trigger limits.

When trade resumed, the BSE index extended its rise by 160.12 points to 1,950 points and the NSE rose another 68.35 points to be up 600 points on the day, the 20 percent limit was triggered and trade was halted for the day.

Exit polls conducted by different TV channels in the 5 phase Lok Sabha elections, which ended Wednesday, predicted Congress-led UPA a slight edge over the BJP-led NDA, with the Third Front and others lagging far behind. However, most exit polls have a reputation for going wrong. In 2004, they gave victory — wrongly, as it turned out — to the NDA. Counting of votes will begin on Saturday morning. With exit polls predicting that the Congress was aehad. TD leaders were upset as the channels rolled out their exit poll results, and refused comment. The BJP claimed it had made its own exit poll, which gave it 166 Lok Sabha and its NDA allies 51, totalling 217. The CNN-IBN poll predicted 185-205 seats for the Congress and its allies and between 165-185 for the NDA. The projection for the Third Front was between 110 to 130 seats. The Congress has gained over the divided Op-position in the state if you believe the exit polls put out by national TV channels.

If you were tuned to local channels, you would think that the Congress had lost. The only exception was the channel Sakshi, run by Mr Jaganmohan Reddy, son of the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, which foresees a sweep for the Congress. But the channel left out 25 seats, saying they were too close to call. That perhaps defines the nature of this election.The exit polls show that there was anti-incumbency, but Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajayam saved the Congress by dividing the sentiment with the TD.

A staggering 1.6 lakh musicians sang Annamacharya keertanas in praise of lord Venkateswara in Hydearabad city on 10th may 2009 Sunday, setting a new world record. The official adjudicator of Guinness Records, Mr Rey-mond Marshal, announced to huge applause that the event, Laksha Gala Sankee-rtanarchana, had broken the previous record of Poland where 60,000 people sang the national anthem together on August 2, 1937.

In all 1.6 lakh people participated in the event. The previous record has been broken. He handed over the certificate to the finance minister, Mr K. Rosaiah. The event was organised to pay tribute to the poet Tallapaka Annamacharya on his 601st birth anniversary. Musicians sang and performed on instruments the Annamacharya songs Bhavamulona, Bramhakadigina Padamu, Enthamatramuna, Podagantimayya, Kondalalo Nelokonna Koneti Rayudu, Narayana Namo Namo and Muddugare Yashoda. The event saw thousands of young musicians, who outnumbered the older participants. The event was organised by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, AP cultural department and Silicon Andhra, a US-based cultural organisation for Telugus. It took three months to organise the singing marathon.

Gilchrist and Rohit shine in win

It seemed the IPL had finally found its Twenty20 soul, with two batsmen combining to score - for the first time in this tournament - at a frenetic pace throughout the innings. But chasing a huge Deccan Chargers total, a limp show from Bangalore Royal Challengers meant another wait for the first closely-fought encounter this season.

The day belonged to Adam Gilchrist and Rohit Sharma, who scored 123 between them, off 75 deliveries, with 88 of them coming in boundary hits. The target of 185, under lights at Newlands, is not an experience teams look forward to. It didn't help that for the third time in a row, Bangalore lost a wicket without having scored a run.

The difference in conditions in the two innings showed, with Deccan's bowlers managing to swing the ball in the initial overs. The first ball of the Bangalore innings, bowled by Fidel Edwards, was a fast, swinging yorker that removed Jesse Ryder for a duck in successive IPL matches.

If Edwards made an early impact, with only 31 runs coming in the Powerplay overs, Gilchrist was not far behind in Deccan's batting Powerplay. In the first two overs, bowled by Praveen Kumar and Dale Steyn, Gilchrist's clean hitting necessitated six fielding changes, and a change of angle to round the stumps from both bowlers. What was constant was Gilchrist's severity on anything erring in length. He reached 26 in the first two overs and inevitably a bowling change followed.

Praveen removed Herschelle Gibbs in his first over after changing ends, and despite VVS Laxman falling soon after, the Gilchrist show continued. From 26 off 11, he slowed down to reach 28 off 19, but then tucked into Jacques Kallis, taking him for 10 in two deliveries. That started the mid-innings assault with Gilchrist hitting clean - not one half-edge, not one unintended shot. He was especially harsh on short deliveries, and if the bowlers got too full, he teed off with similar ease. With one such six off a full Jesse Ryder delivery, in the 10th over, he reached his fifty in 31 balls.

Rohit was just warming up when Gilchrist sizzled. Once his captain got out, Rohit switched to his effortless hitting mode, which was one of the memorable sights of the last year's IPL. That Rohit paced himself well, showed in his scoring just 10 off the first 12 balls he faced, and 42 off the next 18. Anil Kumble's last over, the 13th of the innings, was the springboard for Rohit, with three sixes over midwicket - one swept flat, one lofted effortlessly, and the third a pull off a flatter, shorter delivery. Two more sixes later, Rohit perhaps fell at an inopportune time, with only 12 coming off the last 10 balls of the innings. But enough damage had been done by Rohit and Gilchrist by then.

A third poor start in a row by Bangalore meant they were always struggling against a Deccan attack that showed all the ingredients: hostility through Edwards, thrift through RP Singh (who took the purple cap with two wickets tonight), guile through Pragyan Ojha, and good support through Scott Styris. Once Ryder got out, Bangalore never really got going, and stumbled to 62 for 4 in the 11th over, with Kevin Pietersen back in the pavilion.

Rahul Dravid surprised his critics again, playing his natural shots, opposed to trying to hit too hard as he did against Chennai Super Kings. He finished with 48 off 27 balls, taking the orange cap in the process. Virat Kohli mirrored Dravid's effort, scoring a 32-ball 50, dominated by wristy shots and not one six. But from 62 for 4, with more than half the overs gone, they were fighting a lost cause.

In isolation, the innings played by Dravid and Kohli were as good as either Gilchrist's or Rohit's, with the hitting just as clean. However, isolation is not the luxury cricketers are accorded.

Sourav Ganguly made yet another comeback, this time with the ball, to help Kolkata Knight Riders keep Kings XI Punjab down to 158 for 6. Thereafter, Chris Gayle made the most of two dropped chances to dishearten Punjab and take Kolkata 11 ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis par-score when heavy rain ended the match in the 10th over.

Ganguly had been quiet in the lead-up to this tournament; he had lost his captaincy and looked out of sorts in scoring 1 in 12 balls against Deccan Chargers. Today, though, he made his statement with the ball, taking two wickets in his first over and pulling Punjab back from a solid-yet-unspectacular start.

When Ganguly came on to bowl, Irfan Pathan, promoted to No. 3, had just taken Ishant Sharma for 14 in his third over, and Punjab had moved along to 46 for 1 at the end of six overs. Thirty-two of those had come from Irfan's bat, in 17 deliveries.

And then Ganguly struck, fortuitously at first. Irfan went for a six to the deep midwicket area and was caught smartly by Murali Kartik at the boundary. Two balls later, Ganguly got Ravi Bopara, the opener, to edge to the new captain, Brendon McCullum. Both men were elated, the captain with his bowling change, the bowler having proved a point, and both ran in different directions to celebrate and eventually hugged each other.

Punjab moved from 46 for 1 in six to 67 for 3 in ten overs before a rain interruption. Following that, Punjab enjoyed two of the best overs of their innings. Yuvraj Singh hit a six off Ganguly to take 14 off his third over. Yet, Ganguly ended with figures of 24 for 2 off his four. And just after the rain break, in perhaps a poor tactical move, McCullum brought Chris Gayle on, who had trouble gripping the wet ball and bowled three wides in his 14-run over.

Yuvraj couldn't quite manage a reprise of his six sixes in an over at the same venue, during the inaugural ICC World Twenty20. And once he top-edged Moises Henriques in the 16th over, falling for 38 off 28, caught by Yashpal, Punjab were always struggling.

Thirty-six came off 26 balls after Yuvraj's fall, thanks largely to Mahela Jayawardene, who scored 31 in 19, and took the last over, bowled by Ashok Dinda, for 16, the biggest over of the innings.

But the hitting from Irfan, Yuvraj and Jayawardene paled in comparison with Gayle's. He played the first two overs quietly, and enjoyed a dropped sitter by Karan Goel at short midwicket off Yusuf Abdulla. It was a forgettable day for Goel, who had earlier scored a seven-ball duck.

Once Gayle carved Irfan over cover-point in the third over of the innings, the floodgates opened. From 4 off 8 balls, he reached 31 off 15 through a calculated assault on the left-arm opening bowlers. And then, in the fifth over of the innings, the game breaker came. Irfan was spanked straight and pulled square off the first two balls, and then Gayle showed him the greens, teeing off to over wide long-on.

By the time Gayle was dropped again, by Kumar Sangakkara, off a Piyush Chawla googly, he had taken the match out of Punjab's reach as the dark clouds gathered.

For the second game in succession, Punjab have been curtailed by rain, but this time they succumbed to Ganguly and Gayle, as opposed to their first match, when Delhi's chase was reduced to a six-over hit-out.

Though the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) is still undecided on the second year results, it is expected to announce them either on April 23 or 24.

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2009 Schedule

The second edition of the much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 championship is scheduled to begin on April 18 with first match at Newlands, Cape Town between last year champion Rajasthan Royals and Bangalore Royal Challengers.

The match will commence with a glittering opening ceremony at Newlands before the first match.

The semi-finals and the final will be held at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on May 24.

The domestic Indian cricket tournament, comprising players from all across the world, was forced to shift from India to South Africa following government concern over security arrangements in an election year, as the earlier schedule were overlapping with the general elections starting from next month.

The Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) and IPL organisers had then decided to stage this mega sporting event in South Africa with all logistic and security support from the South African cricket board and government.
